To wrap up the year, this editorial post celebrates the top ten viewed Teaching Matters blog posts in 2018. Conversations between staff and students about such topics need to be further encouraged across the University, and initiatives such as Cake and Coffee Conversations could be one way to take this forward in Schools.

In 2018, I started a lunchtime jogging group for staff and students, which introduced some students to jogging for the first time. Related to health and wellbeing, I also set up a Friday morning coffee break, giving members of staff an opportunity to meet and chat at the end of the week. Cycle Leader, Jog Leader, First Aid).

The Online Learning Network is an academic community offering staff at the University the opportunity to share ideas and practice about online teaching. The November 2018 event was a joint event with another university academic community – the ENGAGE network – and focused on the theme of engaging students online.

As a result, staff time will not be wasted updating and publishing the same information in multiple locations reducing the risk of inconsistent information being presented to students. We found information is held in a number of sources, including, wikis, webpages, VLEs, and inconsistency in processes.
In 2018, Tobias Thejll-Madsen and I worked to plug this gap, and so the Reflection Toolkit was born. There was no single, clear place within the University or beyond for people to go if they were interested in reflection for themselves or in supporting it for others, covering multiple needs and scenarios.
From 2018 to 2021, the racial group that saw the largest increase in suicides among people 10-24 years old was Black individuals, with an increase of 37%.
