To wrap up the year, this editorial post celebrates the top ten viewed Teaching Matters blog posts in 2018. Next year, Teaching Matters colleagues will be undertaking a research project investigating how a multi-authored blog (Teaching Matters!) creates different spaces for conversations around teaching and learning.
This stems from my passionate belief that students can make a real and valuable contribution to the academic research and that engaging in this kind of work is empowering them to recognise their transferable skills and exciting them to continue in study, research and other academic pursuits.
My engagement practice provided me with many opportunities to observe researchers from different disciplines working together as a cohesive team to research some of the most urgent medical challenges of our time. What health research agendas would they set if they could?
While many courses of this kind are excellent, there is nevertheless the danger of conveying an impression that research and teaching are disconnected. Research is something that happens upstream, where experts produce ideas. The course is designed to bridge the gap between teaching and research. General discussion ensued.

This is essential to help students make more informed choices about the kind of work they will really enjoy, and also because employers really value that experience in their recruitment processes. So what is the value of work experience from an employer’s perspective?
Based on findings from the project ‘Learning from Labour: Critical Pedagogy for Working Students’ carried out at Middlesex University in 2022-2023, the study explores the educational and employment challenges faced by working students in UK post-92 universities ( MDX News, 2023 ).

This year, I attended the GCB Awards Ceremony Night 2018, and would like to share everything about it, including students’ thoughts on how studying this course has impacted their lives. Nowadays, there is a lot of false and misleading information that we should recognise and avoid using when we are conducting research.
These projects also develop research and critical skills obtained when writing essays. Moreover, students engage with the ‘real word’ and solve ‘real problems’ compared to artificial ones posed by a lecturer. Through the MSc Performance Psychology programme at the University of Edinburgh, I, along with my dissertation supervisor (Dr Amanda Martindale), was able to partner with the NHS to investigate this idea further, specifically with scrub nurse practitioners serving on organ retrieval teams for my dissertation research.

I was therefore keen to play a role in developing another online, interdisciplinary course based on my experiences and interests (for example, as is shared in this video that showcases part of the senate talk on research led-learning in May 2017), in addition to the numerous skills and networks I would gain and contribute to.
The pathways model aims to promote experiential learning , encourage reflection and highlight the importance of interdisciplinary learning to students when engaging in sustainability issues.
