The dissertation in this program is a major applied research project that is the culmination of a rigorous program of study leading to the Ed.
To wrap up the year, this editorial post celebrates the top ten viewed Teaching Matters blog posts in 2018. In addition, the group is responsible for monitoring the research work funded by the Lecture Recording Programme as part of PTAS. The team is using a “research through design” approach, working with students both as learners and as researchers. She is committed to public engagement and embeds this in her research practice.

In 2018-19, Edinburgh had the largest Welcome Week Facebook group with over 5000 followers. Initially set up as a practitioner forum it has developed into a learning provider and brings together more than 100 colleagues from across the University. SRA used social media to create communities of students before arrival at the University.
In a bid to improve data sharing with students for enhancement, standard high-level student feedback reports were developed and made available to student School Representatives as part of a pilot in three Schools in 2018/19.
At Edinburgh, the rollout of lecture recording is more than just a technical implementation; it is an educational research and development initiative in which staff and students are working together to realise the benefits of lecture recording and explore new and exciting uses via the Principal’s Teaching Award Scheme.
At the same time, thought has gone into how we can support staff and students to get the most out of their blogs for research, teaching, reflection, etc. Lorna Campbell has developed a great workshop, ‘ Blogging to build your professional profile’, with a wonderful, open blog used as course material.
The more we understand about how lecture recording is being used at Edinburgh by staff and students, the more we can tailor support and guidance to meet those specific needs and develop the service accordingly. In 2018, Tobias Thejll-Madsen and I worked to plug this gap, and so the Reflection Toolkit was born. We drew on experience, practice, and research from across the University and sector to create a pragmatic resource that supports effective reflective practice.
In 2018, the Senate Learning and Teaching Committee task group, “ Promoting inclusion, equality and diversity in the curriculum ”, was created to address these concerns. Research shows that there is a national BME attainment gap; that marginalised groups experience a “leaky pipeline” at different levels throughout University.
As a result, staff time will not be wasted updating and publishing the same information in multiple locations reducing the risk of inconsistent information being presented to students. We found information is held in a number of sources, including, wikis, webpages, VLEs, and inconsistency in processes.
From 2018 to 2021, the racial group that saw the largest increase in suicides among people 10-24 years old was Black individuals, with an increase of 37%. And in a research study among the youngest children — ages 5-12 — Black youth were approximately two times more likely to die by suicide than their White counterparts.
Three of these posts featured in the 2018 top ten , while the other seven were published this year… Teaching Matters in 2019 Teaching Matters readership has continued to grow steadily throughout 2019; the October issue (research-led teaching and learning) attracted over 10,000 hits.
The Principal’s Teaching Award Scheme (PTAS) project ‘Lecture Recording for Inclusive Education’, led by Dr Jeremy Knox and Dr Yuchen Wang of the Centre for Research in Digital Education , takes a particular interest in examining the impact of lecture recording on the inclusivity of teaching and learning at the university.
