This stems from my passionate belief that students can make a real and valuable contribution to the academic research and that engaging in this kind of work is empowering them to recognise their transferable skills and exciting them to continue in study, research and other academic pursuits.
As researchers, it’s important to share our findings with the public. The 3MT provides a unique opportunity for PhD students to showcase their research through a short, captivating pitch for a lay audience. You’re able to explain your research to anyone at any time. While many courses of this kind are excellent, there is nevertheless the danger of conveying an impression that research and teaching are disconnected. The Certificate facilitates educational skills development through Peer Assisted Learning and other teaching activities and enhances employability skills amongst graduates. It may seem counterintuitive to add to the significant task of writing a thesis with more writing, particularly when the blogging style is so different, but I hope here to convince you of the benefits for PhD students.
