I still am a teacher in highereducation, but I feel that my words do not have nearly as much impact as those of practising teachers when it comes to preparation for professional practice. I was a school teacher.
The one-year Masters in a UK university is intensive; even more so for an international student in a new teaching and cultural environment. According to many large scale studies on student decision making and outlines in policy statements, highereducation is a step towards enhancing career prospects: in order words, developing employability.
Student-staff partnership is now a timeless concept and integral practice within HigherEducation (HE) ( Bovill, 2019 ). Stemmed and unintended benefits to partnership working: Unsurprisingly, many of these projects spoke about several gains, but most notably these related to students’ employability skills.
While disciplines will continue to underpin the foundations of our knowledge, the issue of interdisciplinary learning and teaching is becoming increasingly relevant for universities preparing students for a changing world. We have had over 140 students enrol on the programme and, so far, 22 have completed the programme in 2017, and 35 in 2018. A sub-set of 8 students have also successfully taken this a step further and, under staff mentorship, have achieved Associate Fellowship of the HEA.
Gavin is the Careers and Employability Manager from the Careers Service and this post forms part of the 20 Years of Enhancement theme. Following the Enhancement Theme, momentum around the co-curriculum continued and gave focus to improving awareness and accessibility for students.
The conference is organised yearly by the Edinburgh University Careers Service , and gathers PhD holders who have transitioned into a wide range of occupations and are happy to share their experience with current students.
