The award of doctorates in Divinity had ceased to depend on advanced scholarship, and had often became more or less honorific as new Bishops began to be granted an automatic Doctorate of Divinity.

Fixed-term contracts have long been the norm for research-only contracts, which are usually dependent on short-term funding from a external grant. However, the Equality Act of 2010, making it discriminatory to enforce retirement by age, has helped to discourage contracts promising ‘permanence’. 2(5)(d) and s.2
