Johns Hopkins Hospital will rename its outpatient center to honor former cardiac surgeon Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., Watkins was the hospital’s first Black chief resident, the university’s first Black full professor of cardiac surgery, and the first African American graduate from Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine.

Jackson was a 2009 recipient of the Dr. John Hope Franklin Award but was recognized at this year’s American Council on Education (ACE) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. regrettably, the award ceremony was cancelled in 2009. Jackson did that by co-founding the Black Student Union.

Building pipelines After attending undergraduate and graduate school, Thompson built a career as a professor, administrator, and researcher/writer before joining the CPE in 2009 as senior vice president for academic affairs. He became executive vice president in 2013 and assumed the presidency in 2018.
