Fixed-term contracts have long been the norm for research-only contracts, which are usually dependent on short-term funding from a external grant. However, the Equality Act of 2010, making it discriminatory to enforce retirement by age, has helped to discourage contracts promising ‘permanence’. 2(5)(d) and s.2

Helen Perkins was appointed as Director of the Society for Research into Higher Education in 2004. In 2002 the chairs of SRHE’s main committees had reached the end of their terms of office, but SRHE glitterati Maria Slowey and Rosemary Deem had been persuaded to chair Research Committee and Publications Committee, respectively.
