by GR Evans Should highereducation providers foster a ‘research culture’? As the body responsible for research under the HigherEducation and Research Act (2017), UK Research and Innovation offers its own definition. Funding for them may be uncertain.
Fixed-term contracts have long been the norm for research-only contracts, which are usually dependent on short-term funding from a external grant. The Office for Students now grants degree-awarding powers to new providers of highereducation but so far these have almost all been confined to powers to award ‘taught degrees’.
That expectation was wrong in 2002, and it’s even worse now, as this grim report shows. Nearly 75% of faculty in highereducation are precarious workers, more like restaurant and hospitality workers, gig performers, contract healthcare workers, and delivery drivers than the tenured professor.
