That expectation was wrong in 2002, and it’s even worse now, as this grim report shows. Nearly 75% of faculty in higher education are precarious workers, more like restaurant and hospitality workers, gig performers, contract healthcare workers, and delivery drivers than the tenured professor. But recognizing that can be liberating.

Fixed-term contracts have long been the norm for research-only contracts, which are usually dependent on short-term funding from a external grant. UTOs must belong to a Faculty or Department but they may choose to be members of more than one. Academic jobs with an element of security are increasingly hard to get.
